If you’ve never seen a podiatrist before, you might be wondering what actually happens during your first visit. Don’t worry – it’s nothing scary, and most people leave feeling much more comfortable than when they arrived! Here’s a brief breakdown of what you can expect:
1. A thorough check-up
We’ll usually start by having a good look at the health of your feet. This can include a Doppler Ultrasound check (to see how well your blood is flowing to the arteries of your feet), sensation checks (to make sure your nerves are working as they should), and diabetic foot checks if needed.
This will indicate whether there is any deterioration in your vascular supply, or nerves which can be related to conditions such as peripheral vascular disease, calcified arteries in your legs and diabetes, all which can be factors for more serious conditions such as heart attacks and strokes!
... Prevention is key!
2. Routine care for skin and nails
A big part of podiatry is keeping your feet happy day to day. At your first appointment, I can treat common problems such as:
Hard skin (callus)
Corns (on sole of foot, inbetween the toes)
Thickened or fungal nails
Ingrown toenails
Cracked heels
Verrucae
Dry or flaky skin
& More!
These conditions, especially callus and corns, are typically dealt with using a scalpel blade - but don't worry, it's not minor surgery! It is typically painless because it is only hard skin being removed and nothing else. You could say it's a well practiced skill!
3. Personal advice just for you
Everyone’s feet are different, so we’ll chat about the best way to care for yours. This might include tips on footwear, how to prevent problems from coming back, and what to keep an eye on in the future.
Most importantly, your first appointment is a chance to ask any questions you might have about your feet and general health. Whether it’s a niggling pain, a toenail that won’t settle, or just wanting to feel more confident in your foot health, I'm here to help.
